In this class we will be learning and honing the elements of vivid and effective writing, across all genres. Our primary focus will be on short fiction and poetry although creative essays, prose, public speaking, spoken word, screenwriting and song writing are never off-limits. Students will be introduced to modern and classic authors who exhibit lyrical language, memorable images, effective metaphors, authentic voice, compelling dialogue and inventive characterizations.

Classes will consist of:
  • Exposure to literature- Students will read and discuss the elements and style of short stories, creative essays, poetry and prose.
  • Writing prompts and jumping off points- Each week students will be presented with a variety of prompts to stimulate creativity and generate new work. These exercises get students thinking “outside the box”, and can be utilized time and again as a tool to break through writer’s block
